Adoption Options FAQ

  1. Tell us a little about the founding and development of your organization?
Adoption Options was founded in 1981 due to an “outcry” from the community that a non-religious-affiliated agency was needed. Adoption Options was the first agency in Colorado that was not a religious-affiliated agency. Adoption Options places about 30-40 children a year from our domestic infant, designated adoptions, international adoption and foster care programs. Adoption Options continues to partner with agencies throughout the country and develop new programs that help families grow through adoption. We counsel over 200 birth parents a year and educate the community on adoption-related issues.
  2. How are your adoption home study and your organization unique?
Adoption Options has been in business for 30 years and has been instrumental in working closely with legislation to set rules and regulations and work with the State and private agencies to develop and maintain high standards for the adoption industry. We place many children from the foster care system. Adoption Options has the contract through the State of Colorado to be the ICPC coordinator for private adoptions. We have the contract to provide the SAFE training (the home study process that all families must participate in to get a home study) and have the only trainer in the State to provide the training.
  3. Why are you passionate about adoption and the home study process?
Adoption Options is passionate about finding families for all children. We are ethical and believe in providing quality services for all families and children. Adoption Options has a positive reputation with the State of Colorado, professionals in the adoption community, and families that we have worked with.
  4. How long is an adoption home study valid?
The home study is good for three years in Colorado with an addendum needing to be completed annually until the family is placed. If a family transfers from one agency to another, they must complete an update if their study is less than three years old. If the study is older than three years when they transfer, they must engage in a new study.
  5. Approximately how much time is necessary to complete an adoption home study by your organization?
Approximately 60 days dependent on the background checks.
  6. Can adoptive parents use a home study completed by your organization to adopt a child born in another state?
    Yes.
  7. If you complete my home study, do you also have to complete my post-placement visits?
No; however, we would encourage families to use the same agency for post-placement as they used for their home study.
  8. How many post-placement visits does your organization require?
    Three post-placement visits over a six-month period.
  9. What is some advice you can give to potential adoptive families about the home study process? What should they be prepared for?
The advice that we would give to potential families is that the home study is a “process” and that although it can feel like an invasive process, it is necessary to ask these tough questions so that we can ensure that the family is prepared for the placement of a child and the most appropriate family for that child and birth family. The home study takes some time so that the caseworker can support and educate the family on all aspects of adoption.
  10. What do your home study social workers look for in a home and a family when they visit potential adoptive families' homes?
Adoption caseworkers are looking for: how was the applicant raised as a child; what is the home and community like (cultural issues with this); personal characteristics of the applicants; the marriage if applicable of the applicants; financial and safety of home; extended family support systems; parenting style and specialized parenting skills; and the overall strengths of the family and any ongoing concerns that need to be worked on.
  11. Are you Hague accredited, and if not, does your international home study comply with Hague International Standards?
We are Hague accredited and follow all of the standards set for the Hague Convention.
  12. Do you have experience in completing the home study and working with international placement companies?
Adoption Options has completed several home studies for several international placement companies. We do have our own international program in any country but provide the secondary services. We provide educational service and counseling both pre- and post-placement/adoption.
  13. Are there other services and benefits you would like to share about your company?
Other services that we offer are educational services, including core training for families and ongoing training throughout the process. We offer birth parent counseling services, abbreviated home studies for relatives, expert witness testimony, custody evaluations, non-identifying and search and reunion services.
