Adoption Matters, Inc (NC) FAQ

  1. Tell us a little about the founding and development of your organization?
Adoption Matters was created in 2012. The agency was initially established as an LLC and converted to a non-profit corporation in March 2015. We have a dedicated Board of Directors made up of adoptive parents, adoption social workers and successful business professionals who all share the same goal: provide adoption services in an ethical and cost effective way.
  2. How are your adoption home study and your organization unique?
We are very flexible and work to meet the needs of the client in terms of meeting times/days of the week. We strive to be as efficient as possible without compromising meeting the state and federal standards. We utilize a home study software product that streamlines the process and safe guard documents. We have received very positive feedback from our clients who appreciate the convenience of not having to mail important documents and being assured that their information is safeguarded and not sitting in the back of their social worker’s car.
  3. Why are you passionate about adoption and the home study process?
We believe that adoption, when handled correctly, can be the most amazing example of human generosity between birth parents and adoptive parents for the benefit of a child in need. As adoption professionals it is both humbling and an honor to be a witness to such as an act.
  4. How long is an adoption home study valid?
Home studies in NC are valid for 18 months and SC they are valid for 12 months; however, many clients will be required by their adoption agencies to update every 12 months. We will inform clients when they need to begin the update process to avoid being out of compliance.
  5. Approximately how much time is necessary to complete an adoption home study by your organization?
We strive to work at a pace that is comfortable for our clients. We don’t want to push clients and we don’t want to be the one holding up the process. We can typically complete an expedited home study within three weeks (1-2 weeks from the time we have all required documentation). Our average time for completion for a traditional domestic home study is less than two months.
  6. Can adoptive parents use a home study completed by your organization to adopt a child born in another state?
Yes. It happens all the time.
  7. If you complete my home study, do you also have to complete my post-placement visits?
No, but we would love the opportunity. We do the post-placement work for almost all of our families. We can also do the post-placement work for a family that had their home study completed by another agency and we are asked to do so quite often
  8. How many post-placement visits does your organization require?
If it is a NC and SC adoption then we require at least two. It is important to know that the first visit must be completed within two weeks of placement. If the adoption is being fed in a different state then we made need to do more to meet the standards of both states.
  9. What is some advice you can give to potential adoptive families about the home study process? What should they be prepared for?
Relax. It is our job to help you prepare for the home study and the adoption. We will guide you at a pace that you are comfortable with and take things step by step. Our on-line software helps clients stay organized by providing you with detailed checklists and document uploads that allow clients to have everything in one secure place that you can access at any time.
  10. What do your home study social workers look for in a home and a family when they visit potential adoptive families' homes?
We are looking to get to know our families. We will make sure that there are no safety hazards for children and if there are we will educate families about how to make changes. We don’t expect families or their homes to be perfect and will not be doing a “white glove test”. Our goal is to prepare families to provide safe and loving homes for children.
  11. Are you Hague accredited, and if not, does your international home study comply with Hague International Standards?
We are currently undergoing the Hague accreditation process and expect to be fully accredited by March of 2016.
  12. Do you have experience in completing the home study and working with international placement companies?
Yes, our director was the social work supervisor for an international Hague accredited agency before starting Adoption Matters and has been writing and approving international home studies for 8+ years.
  13. Are there other services and benefits you would like to share about your company?
We are dedicated to helping families get through their adoption in the way that best meets their needs while maintaining the highest professional standards and ethics. We have strong relationships with adoption professionals throughout the Carolinas and across the country who collaborate with Adoption Matters to ensure that your adoption experience will be as smooth as possible.
