Alabama Social Work Services FAQ

  1. Tell us a little about the founding and development of your organization?
After spending years working in child welfare, I realized a specific need that families had in Alabama. That was, to find a professional who could complete an adoption home study for their family in an efficient, comprehensive, and yet affordable way. I love helping families provide permanent homes for children. I felt with my knowledge and expertise in child welfare, I could help these families' dreams finally become a reality.
  2. How are your adoption home study and your organization unique?
"Organization" and "flexibility" describe Alabama Social Work Services. We always "walk our families" through the process in a very organized and detailed manner. Also, appointments can be made on nights and weekends if needed.
  3. Why are you passionate about adoption and the home study process?
I am an adoptive parent, so I "get it." I have been in your shoes! While the home study process may seem arduous at times, it is the best way to help families assess and prepare themselves for their adoption.
  4. How long is an adoption home study valid?
Alabama adoption laws state that the pre-placement home study is valid for 24 months. International home studies have to be updated every 6 months in compliance with Citizen Immigration Services' requirements. It is best to keep the home study current within the calendar year.
  5. Approximately how much time is necessary to complete an adoption home study by your organization?
If you need to work quickly, we can do that. Please be advised the background clearances needed in your home study can take longer than a month to complete. It is possible to complete the process shortly after these clearances are completed.
  6. If you complete my home study, do you also have to complete my post-placement visits?
We do not have to complete this post placement section, but this is usually preferable.
  7. How many post-placement visits does your organization require?
One to two post-placement visits are needed depending on your agency's requirements.
  8. What is some advice you can give to potential adoptive families about the home study process? What should they be prepared for?
Relax, and use this time for true family reflection and preparation for your adoption. We will help you assess your family's relationships, background, health, finances and the strengths within your family that will match the needs of a child being placed in your home. The social worker will provide you with a wealth of useful resources. Use them! Most families find that the home study process is really an exciting time in their lives.
  9. What do your home study social workers look for in a home and a family when they visit potential adoptive families' homes?
We are not rating your home for the next "Southern Living Magazine!" We are rather helping you prepare for your adoption. While your physical living conditions are important, it is just as important for the social worker to assess your family's overall strengths and needs throughout the process.
  10. Are there other services and benefits you would like to share about your company?
ASWS provides adoption home studies for domestic and interstate adoptions. This includes the initial home study and all of your required post placement visits. I also provide child custody home studies for guardianship cases, divorces, etc. I enjoy working with various adoption, juvenile, and family law attorneys/courts to provide this service. I would be happy to provide your family, your attorney or your agency with free information about all of my services.
