Rhode to Adoption FAQ

  1. Tell us a little about the founding and development of your organization?
Rhode to Adoption was founded to provide families in Rhode Island with a modern, ethical, and highly supportive adoption experience. Recognizing the need for personalized service, transparent communication, and ongoing support beyond placement, the agency was created to guide families from day one through the lifespan of their child’s adoption journey. Rhode to Adoption is committed to education, positive adoption language, and building strong, well-prepared adoptive families.
  2. How are your adoption home study and your organization unique?
Rhode to Adoption offers individualized, relationship-centered services rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. We emphasize education, emotional preparation, and readiness to parent — not just paperwork completion. Our work is grounded in our signature CARE program, created to provide structured, ongoing support after the home study is completed and before placement occurs. CARE ensures families are not left navigating the waiting period alone, offering comprehensive guidance that recognizes every family’s unique timeline. Through CARE — which stands for Collaboration, Administrative oversight, Regulatory compliance, and Education & Support — Rhode to Adoption actively coordinates and communicates with placement agencies, tracks required documentation and ICPC compliance, completes unlimited home study revisions and addendums as needed, and ensures all state, federal, and international requirements are met. At the same time, families receive meaningful, hands-on support including monthly check-ins, virtual and in-person trainings, optional peer mentorship through our “Adoption Anchors” program, consultation regarding potential matches, support groups, access to a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and lifelong connection to our agency. By combining regulatory expertise with emotional and community-based support, the CARE program keeps families informed, prepared, and confidently supported throughout the waiting period and beyond — because “Once you are a Rhode to Adoption family, you are always a Rhode to Adoption family.”
  3. Why are you passionate about adoption and the home study process?
We believe adoption is a lifelong emotional journey. Preparing families thoroughly, supporting them during the waiting period, and witnessing the formation of families through adoption is deeply meaningful work. Our passion lies in ensuring children are welcomed into safe, prepared, and loving homes.
  4. How long is an adoption home study valid?
In Rhode Island, an adoption home study is valid for one year and must be updated annually if a placement has not yet occurred.
  5. Approximately how much time is necessary to complete an adoption home study by your organization?
Home studies are typically completed within eight to twelve weeks, depending on the timely submission of required documentation. RTA offers expedited Home Study services in unique situations.
  6. Can adoptive parents use a home study completed by your organization to adopt a child born in another state?
Yes. Rhode to Adoption home studies meet Rhode Island requirements and comply with Interstate Compact (ICPC) regulations, allowing families to adopt children born in other states. Rhode to Adoption maintains partnerships with several reputable placement agencies. While adoptive families are always free to choose any placement agency, many families choose to work with one of our trusted partners because we are already familiar with their specific requirements, documentation standards, and processes. This established collaboration allows for streamlined communication, efficient coordination, and fewer delays — ultimately creating a smoother and more supported experience for families throughout the adoption journey.
  7. If you complete my home study, do you also have to complete my post-placement visits?
Rhode to Adoption typically completes post-placement visits to ensure continuity of care and consistent support; however, families may choose another licensed provider in the state of Rhode Island if they prefer.
  8. How many post-placement visits does your organization require?
Rhode Island requires a minimum of two post-placement visits. Additional visits may be required depending on the placing state, court requirements, or international regulations.
  9. What is some advice you can give to potential adoptive families about the home study process? What should they be prepared for?
The home study process requires honesty, patience, organization, and openness. Families should be prepared to discuss their background, parenting philosophy, finances, and motivation for adoption. While the process can feel detailed, it is designed to ensure children are placed in safe, prepared, and loving homes. Families should be prepared to submit required documentation such as background checks, financial information, health forms, employment verification, and personal references. Families will also need to complete 10 hours of online training before the home study can be finalized.
  10. What do your home study social workers look for in a home and a family when they visit potential adoptive families' homes?
As part of the home study process, adoption workers complete a safety check of the home. The requirements are straightforward and not difficult to meet. The home should be in good repair and provide a safe environment for a child. If there is access to a pool or other body of water, families will discuss a safety plan to ensure appropriate supervision and protection. If there are firearms or other weapons in the home, families will review how they are securely stored in accordance with safety guidelines.
  11. Are you Hague accredited, and if not, does your international home study comply with Hague International Standards?
Rhode to Adoption partners with Hague Accredited agencies when required and ensures that international home studies comply with Hague Convention standards when applicable.
  12. Do you have experience in completing the home study and working with international placement companies?
Yes. Rhode to Adoption collaborates with licensed and accredited placement agencies to ensure the international requirements are met. Families are guided through education, documentation preparation, and post-placement reporting as required by the placing agency or country.
  13. Are there other services and benefits you would like to share about your company?
In addition to home study services, Rhode to Adoption offers complimentary consultations, adoption education sessions, waiting family support, post-placement supervision, and lifespan support services. We emphasize inclusive language, trauma-informed parenting preparation, and culturally responsive adoption practices to support children and families long after placement.
